Juneteenth (June 19th) is the celebration of the end of slavery by the black community, which they’ve celebrated since 1866. But it wasn’t until this week(!!) that it became a federal holiday, which is great!! Even though the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in 1863, black people in the south were still held as slaves. It wasn’t until federal troops came to the south to ensure that the enslaved were set free in 1865 that black people began to experience freedom. And that’s where Juneteenth started from! So today, and everyday, I am celebrating the diversity of humanity, the unique gifts we all bring to the table, and will keep working to make the world a more inclusive, equitable, and beautiful place so that ALL may thrive and have their dreams come true.
